Somatic Coaching: What it is and how it can help?
Many of us spend much of the day “in our heads” — analysing, replaying the past, worrying about the future, or trying to think our way out of challenges.
Traditional coaching can offer fresh perspectives through reflection, reframing and insight. But if you tend to overthink, it can sometimes unintentionally amplify those same mental loops.
Somatic coaching takes a different approach. It trusts that your body — your sensations, posture, breath, emotions and nervous system — carries valuable information about who you are, what you hold, and what you long for. The word soma, from ancient Greek, means “body,” and somatic coaching sees you not as a mind in a body, but as a whole, integrated being where body, emotions, thoughts and spirit all contribute to your wisdom.
As a somatic coach, I don’t dismiss thinking or cognitive insight. Instead, I also invite in other forms of knowing — intuition, sensing, feeling and embodied awareness. This creates a more holistic and grounded path for personal growth.
What You Can Expect From a Body-Oriented Coaching Session (With Me)
As in any coaching process, spoken conversation forms the basic framework of our work together. We rely on dialogue — through active listening, thoughtful questions, reflection and meaning-making — to explore your experience and articulate insights. This distinguishes body-oriented coaching from modalities such as hands-on bodywork, which are primarily physical.
Within this conversational frame, the adventure phase - i.e. the middle part of the session - introduces something different. Here, I will invite you not only to think about a situation, but also to attune to what is happening in your body in the present moment: sensations, emotions, breath, impulses and shifts in your internal landscape. By bringing attention to your embodied experience, we allow the body’s own intelligence to emerge, often revealing perspectives that aren’t reachable through thought alone.
Somatic coaching is deeply rooted in the Here and Now. We work with whatever arises as you tune inward — which is why mindfulness naturally becomes a central part of the process. My role is to help you slow down, connect with yourself, and navigate the rich information your body offers.
Beyond this basic approach, I might also invite you to explore your internal knowledge more directly, through guided processes in which we connect to and begin to dialogue with your bodily awareness. This can be especially powerful when working with limiting beliefs, emotional blocks, feelings of stuckness etc.
Just by meeting these hidden places within us ourselves with openness and curiosity, we invite new changes to bring us closer to where we want to be. In body-oriented coaching, the mantra “sometimes less is more” really is applicable.
Who is Somatic Coaching for?
Somatic Coaching can be useful for almost anyone, especially if they’re open and curious about working with the body. But I would especially recommend it for people who:
want to feel more alive and deepen their emotional connection to themselves;
want to become more self-compassionate and kinder toward themselves;
are going through major life transitions, such as career changes, returning from burnout, becoming a parent;
are disconnected from their bodies, e.g. constantly operate from the head;
are struggling with difficult feelings, such as anxiety and feeling insecure.
feel “stuck” despite lots of talking and thinking.
Somatic coaching is not intended for acute psychological crises or processing severe trauma. It complements, but does not replace, therapy or medical support where needed.
There are of course people who simply prefer structured, logical thinking, practical action plans, etc. And that’s perfectly ok too!
